Auto Financing No Job

What is the best way to get an auto loan?
I have kind of a tricky situation. My current vehicle is financed in my fiance’s name. We owe $5,000 on it, but we need a new one badly. This thing is a huge piece of junk. Waaay too many problems to list.
His credit is horrible since he got divorced 2 years ago. My credit is pretty much nonexistant. I have a student loan and 2 credit cards… one of which I had defaulted on when I lost my job in November, but is now current.
We were looking to get a new vehicle in my name, since my credit is obviously better than his. What is the best way to go about getting an auto loan?
If/when I get one… what do we do with our current vehicle? No one is going to want to buy it, and we can’t afford to pay it off if we get a new car.
Sorry if this is confusing… much appreciation for all of your help!
Apply for a loan, your name only. Since his credit is horrible anyway, it won’t matter if he gets a repossession on top of everything else, which won’t affect your credit at all.
If you get the loan, buy a car. Stop paying on the other one, in his name. They will harass him, and eventually repossess it, sell it, and continue to harass him, but you’ll have a car to drive.
Why new? Lots of bargains in used, and less to lose.
